A festival for everyone
The Port Eliot Festival is a relaxed celebration of books, music, films, fashion, food, flowers, nature, comedy, photography and wild swimming.
It takes place over four days in July in the ancient Port Eliot estate in south-east Cornwall. Originally a literary festival, it has grown to include much more besides books. The organisers aim to offer ‘artistic surprises’ in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
The festival has a reputation for attracting big-name performers, often presenting new work or doing things they wouldn’t normally do. At last year’s festival Kate Winslet performed a rip-roaring secret show, Martin Scorsese selected the films for the outdoor cinema, Suggs from Madness DJ-ed in the woods through the night and fashion figures Barbara Hulanicki, Luella Bartley, Stephen Jones and Louise Gray created fashion looks for the audience. The 2012 line-up of artists will be announced in March.
As in previous years, the festival will have an outdoor cinema and the estate’s walled garden will become the Wardrobe Department where leading designers will help festival-goers create their own fashions. There will be live music beside the river, and a flower show curated by Ballet Rambert’s production designer Michael Howells.
Port Eliot has been lived in for over 1,000 years. The house was remodelled by Sir John Soane in the 18th century. The grounds were designed by Humphrey Repton and lead to a secret estuary and a railway viaduct designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Port Eliot is the historic seat of the Earl and Countess of St Germans and is currently the family home of the 10th Earl and Countess.
The festival takes place on 19–22 July. A weekend ticket including camping costs £150 adults, £75 children 8–15, under-8s free.
